This is my final painting for advanced painting. I am so proud of it, which is a relief considering that all my other paintings were so shitty that I actually tossed the canvases out. This class made me feel like absolute shit as an artist and made me seriously reconsider the university I'm enrolled at. But, man, once Jupiter came together, I felt like a painter again.

The assignment was self-directed and my proposal was to do a diptych showing Jupiter and the Galilean moons in initial and late stages of human colonisation. In the first panel, the shadow of Ganymede falls on Jupiter as a large ship carrying the first wave of colonists orbits the planet. In the second panel, an inter-moon commuter ship is approaching Europa, which is well into the process of being terraformed. Io and Callisto (brightest speck to the left of the commuter & Io) are visible beyond it.

I spent a lot of time just building it up slowly with thin washes of acrylic and then oil paint to get the starfield. And each star was placed individually. It's cool to see in-person, because most stars don't show up from far away, but as you walk closer and closer to the paintings, more stars reveal themselves. I also realised, equally slowly, that Europa really isn't suitable for terraformation. XD I was thinking too much of Farmer in the Sky (even though that was on Ganymede) when I came up with the concept. I'm still not sure how to finish it off. Something is needed to keep the atmosphere from bleeding off, and to protect from Jupiter's radiation. Maaaayyyyybe the whole thing's domed? The tech even needed to bring Europa that far to open habitability would be pretty high, so, presumably that could be done.

Influences are 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Red Mars trilogy, Farmer in the Sky, and Avatar. The program Celestia was used to position and scale the planet and moons.

Each panel is 5' by 3' oil on canvas. I did some digital touch-ups on the dark sides of the celestial bodies because they're a bit shiny and had a lot of glare in the photos.

Incredible, you captured the beauty of Jupiter extremely well, especially on a 5x3 oil painting, very impressive!

-Those who ruin their pics with watermarking will receive neither favorite nor comment on them from me, One can just as easily watermark the background of their work and keep its beauty intact.

The background is painted with a lot of thin layers, starting with a light pink and then getting progressively dark with blue, purple, red, and black washes. I've uploaded all the work-in-progress images I have here, with a more detailed description of the process. That should help you more. :)
